Start thinking of Grog and Jog teams and we will register for our teams next week….Each team will have one Captain and 3 runners. The date is 10/10/10, 4PM at the Wild Colonial, Providence. Folks will have to organize and register their own teams this year. Elena is waiting for the application and will make it available as soon as she gets it!

Hi Everyone,

Its time to put together teams for this year’s Grog and Dog Jog.  This is a really fun event and we are hoping to have several teams from the TIRs.  The registration process is a little different this year.  These are 4 person teams, and you should work together to register teams as soon as possible.  We will not be facilitating club registrations this year….

So far I know that me, Fitzy and Coach have sent in team registrations.

My team: ES, Claudio, Bill O’Gara, Kathy O’Gara ( Brooklyn)

Fitzy:  DF, Linda Fitz, Bob McColgan, Ellen Flynn ( Brooklyn)

Coach is working on his team now….

Pick a theme, make a team and sign up before this opens up to the general public!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

The Wamps are planning to host a special fun run on Sunday Sept 19th from Mr Fitzy’s house (across from the Greenlodge School) as a fundraiser for Jim Morris’s little grandson who lost part of his foot in a lawnmower accident recently. Details will follow! Here is the announcement from the Wamps:

SAVE THE DATE – SUNDAY, SEPT 19

2ND ANNUAL WAMP/TIR DEDHAM RUNAROUND

10:00am

Brunch following

Fitz Family Funhouse

Stay tuned for more details, but you may want to take Monday off work

Hope you are well and staying cool this summer.  Just wanted to touch base with you about a run we are hosting in Dedham, from Fitz’s house again, but this year, we are doing it for Jim Morris and his grandson.  I’m sure you are well aware of the terrible accident and the long recovery for his grandson.  The Wamps were hoping that the TIRs would be able to put this on their calendar and come on by in droves.  Jim wants no part of doing a “fundraiser” for his grandson, but we were thinking we would do it the old fashioned way and put a “jar” out.  I just can’t imagine the medical bills associated with recovery and rehab.  Jim has done so much for our Club and has been so kind to so many around the “running world” that we are really hoping that we get a great showing.

This is what will be posted in our newsletter, hoping that TIRs are going to be a big part of this.  I think there were at least 10 or so of you all last year that showed up but was hoping for boatloads more this year.  Fitz and I are making plans now.  I am assuming most of our Club will be there to show their support for Jim.  With a 10:00 start, we were thinking of a brunch kind of a thing with good food and libations following the run.  Lots of parking in the school across from his house.

UPCOMING EVENTS and RACES OF INTEREST

This note comes from Dave Wessman:

I am on the committee of a charity “Family and Friends of Children with Genetic Disorders” which is going to be holding its second annual road race this October 3rd.  David, is a member of the Thirsty Irish Runners and I am hoping that you might be able to relay the message to them and see if any of them would be interested and available to run in the race.  I have attached the letter which explains briefly about the race and the organization as well as the donation request letter in case you may know anyone who would want to make a donation.  More information and online registration can be found at the organizations website which is www.fogrun.org. I would truly appreciate it so, so much if even some of the runners would come to the race.

Thank you very much,

TJ McCaslin

SALLY’S PAGE:

A few updates on Sally Nasar –

Keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she forges on with her battle with cancer. Even though she is only 10 years old she is one of the toughest TIRs in history!

:

We will be sponsoring a blood drive..”pints for half pints” in honor of Sally on Saturday 9/4 from 9-3 at Dedahm High School. To make an appt. please call Elaine @ 781-249-6437.

Sally update 8/25

posted by Robert Naser – Wednesday, August 25, 2010
Sally’s chemo treatment scheduled for yesterday (8/24) was postponed one week. Dr. Gebhardt wanted more time to allow her wounds to heal before the chemo ravages her immune system and significantly increases risk and consequences of an infection.
Her pain level is very low; she only has pain when she bends/straightens her leg which is unfortunate because she will be starting physical therapy soon. She is being weaned from the methadone over the next week or so and has not been asking for the oxycondone.
Sally is very tentative about moving about and describes her leg as “feeling weird” which seems totally appropriate given the type of leg reconstruction she had.
Overall, the healing process seems to be going well with no unexpected issues or signs of infection.

Sally Update 8/26

posted by Robert Naser – Thursday, August 26, 2010
The next phase of Sally’s treatment is determined by her histological response to the initial (pre-surgery) chemotherapy. A “good” response shows 90%+ necrosis (death) of the tumor. Sally’s response was 85% necrosis. While this is “close” to the good response, clinically it is still considered a “poor” response. Consequently, this changes her chemotherapy regimen going forward and is one indicator of overall outcomes.

Dr.’s Kesselheim and Weinacht did indicate the the pathology exam showed that the tumor’s margins were “clear” which is an good sign that the tumor was isolated and fully resected.

The “poor” response has no affect on her next two chemotherapy treatments. However, because she is a participant in a clinical trial for osteosarcoma, she may potentially have two new drugs added to her therapy: ifosfamide and etoposide. This is in addition to the standard Methotrexate, Andriamycin, cisPlatin (MAP) therapy she has been receiving all along. The Childrens Oncology Group randomly selects participants to be included in this MAPie study. We will know if she is selected in the next couple of weeks. Even if she is selected, we have the choice to opt out and stay with a standard treatment plan of MAP only.

Ifosfamide and etoposide are not new drugs. They have been used to treat many cancers and are, in fact, regularly used to treat metastatic osteosarcoma. Like all of our decisions, this one has consequences with either choice.

Researchers believe that there may be a benefit to the addition of etoposide and ifosfamide for non-metastatic osteosarcoma as well as metastatic osteosarcoma and that these drugs may improve overall success rates. However, they are not sure, hence the reason for the study. For Sally, this means a whole new set of risks related to side effects. These risks are include some of the ones she has already experienced like nausea and hair loss but it also exposes her to new, more deleterious side effects such as kidney damage, neurological damage and others.

We are all disappointed tonight including Sally who realizes that her treatment may be more intensive and longer than she had hoped for.
